Renee Lalique

November 21st, 2008

I recently visited the Musee D’orsay and was spellbound by the Art Nouveau collection, especially the intricate and exquisitely detailed work of Renee Lalique. The images I took of these two pieces really illustrate his amazingly detailed work.

Jewelry Boxes for Little Girls

November 18th, 2008

Jewelry boxes are always a welcome gift, especially for little girls who love to tuck their treasures into a pretty container. Some of the jewelry boxes in this collection are theme boxes, designed around popular mythical characters. Other boxes are more traditional — like a jewelry or music box for an adult but on a smaller scale. I think you’ll find the perfect jewelry box in this collection. Ancient Jewelry Finds

November 16th, 2008
Archaeologists recently discovered this 2,000 year old gold, pearl and emerald earring in the ruins of a building in Jerusalem. The design isn’t unlike jewelry we see on ears today, especially jewelry from people who are inspired by ancient pieces, like designer Amrita Singh (the first century collar necklace in the ancient jewelry gallery looks a lot like her gold and ruby necklace from 2006). And a gold bracelet found in Pompeii resembles a corsage bracelet that Maggie Gyllenhaal wore to the premiere of The Dark Knight. Fine jewelry is timeless.

Tips for Soldering Jewelry

November 14th, 2008

Clean - All dirt and grease (such as oils from fingers) must be removed before soldering. A pickle solution is the best way to do this. Try not to handle the metal with your hands. Use copper tweezers or flat nosed pliers to move and arrange the metal if possible. If the metal is dirty, often the solder will not flow.

Make sure you keep your flux is also clean, and if it becomes contaminated, toss it out. Flux comes in numerous forms from a paste to a liquid. It’s applied to the surfaces to be heated to assist the solder to flow and to prevent fire scale. It is applied to the metal using a small paint brush such as you might find in a child’s water color set.
