Best Jewelry Trends on the SAG Red Carpet

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Kate Hudson pulled off one of the best jewelry looks on last evening’s SAG red carpet by turning her Cartier diamond sautoir spotlight necklace around so that it draped along the open back of her Emilio Pucci gown. Kate was one of many celebrities who chose white metal/white diamond jewelry for the event.

Tina Fey’s earrings were from Neil Lane’s new Renaissance collection, and fashioned from a mix of moonstone, brown diamonds, yellow diamonds and white diamonds, all set in platinum. Patricia Arquette chose colorful jewelry, too — her huge yellow gold chandelier earrings were set with emeralds.

Large pendant-drop earrings made a splash on the ears of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Julie Bowen, Holly Hunter and many other celebrities. Joan Allen gets the nod for the most unusual jewelry on the red carpet, with a striking Native American-like waterfall necklace.

Seed Bead Jewelry, Get Started

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Seed bead jewelry making, also referred to as bead weaving or beadweaving, is the practice of stitching tiny glass beads together (called seed beads) using needle and thread. Even for the avid bead lover, this type of jewelry making can be a little intimating at first, but to get started, it only takes a small amount of supplies. The basics, at least, are not that difficult to master with a little practice and patience.

Like most jewelry techniques, there is seemingly no end to the tools and supplies you could use for seed bead jewelry; however, if you just want to get a little taste of it and see what it is like before investing a lot of time and money, this tutorial can get you started. Even if you aren’t interested in making extremely complicated designs, being able to make some simple pieces to combine with other techniques, such as the Beaded Bead Bracelet pictured, can be reason enough to give this a try.

Heart Jewelry Design Tips

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Heart themed jewelry is one of the most popular and enduring trends in jewelry. So, how can you keep up with trends like heart jewelry, but still create your own unique look? Here are just a few ideas to get your brainwaves flowing with creative heart-themed jewelry ideas:

- Consider using colored wire. Most of us are so used to using the old stand-by of sterling or gold-filled that we forget how many wonderful colors of wire are available on the market today.

- Keep on the look out for heart beads – stone, lampwork, enamel, metal clay, polymer clay, wood, the list is endless. Can’t find the heart bead you want? Try making one or working with a bead maker to help create a signature bead of your own.

- Think outside of the bead box and keep you eyes open for unique components such as heart shaped buttons.

- Check out the latest charms available and look for romance related charms to use in your jewelry. Use them as is or add a design element to them by creating a patina, using Silver Black for example.

- Try heart shaped cabs in your work. Either wrap them with wire or bead around them.

- Add a touch of romance by incorporating ribbon into a piece of jewelry. Quilt stores have often been a great source for me when I’m looking for unique items to add to my jewelry designs.

- Fabricate your own heart pieces with a few hand tools using the same technique described in my Fabricated Star project.

These are just a few ideas to help you think of creative ways to make your heart-themed jewelry special. If you’d like more inspiration, you can find plenty on my site, and by using the search box on the homepage, you can quickly find heart related jewelry projects and ideas to get you started. Two Tips For Finding an Affordable Diamond Engagement Ring

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

You’ve probably looked at a few stores, maybe been to your local mall and looked at prices. Scary isn’t it? At least for those of us who don’t have a lot of money. If you’re reading this article then that means you must be doing your research. That’s great! You’re off to a good start. Now keep reading, here are some tips that will hopefully help you find that perfect and affordable diamond engagement ring for your little jewel.

1. The 4C’s - The 4C’s are Carat, Cut, Clarity and Color. These are the four standards of measurement and quality that determine the price of each individual diamond. If you’re going to find yourself a good quality diamond for your future wife, you must understand the four C’s. You can either look them up on-line, or go to your local jeweler and ask one of the attendants to explain the grading system to you. The important thing is to find what you want; do you want a big diamond? You might have to sacrifice a little color and clarity to get a big diamond at the price you want. It all depends on what your requirements are.

2. Don’t Buy a Brand Name - If you’re looking for affordable diamond engagement ring, the LAST place you want to go is to Tiffany’s or Cartier. With these types of stores, you’re not paying the extra money for extra quality; you’re paying the extra money for the brand name. Since these names are so well liked, they can afford to add $10,000 to the price of a diamond and ring without losing profits. Look for jewelry stores that have a wide selection of diamonds, but are not that well known. This way you can get a good quality diamond without the ridiculous markup.

I hope these tips have helped you in your search for an affordable diamond engagement ring. I know you’re on the right track if you’re doing your research. Find out what kind of a ring you want, and find the store that can get it to you for the lowest price. The main thing being, don’t do anything on impulse. Take your time, find a good store offering affordable diamond engagement rings and you’ll be set.
