Maybe you saw last Friday’s Sundial Pendant. Today’s Nocturnal Necklace approaches time from another perspective, measuring it when you align the North Star and the Big Dipper. The pendant comes with instructions and hangs from a black nylon cord.

Create Jewelry Stones

Create Jewelry Stones: Stunning Designs to Make and Wear by Marlene Blessing and Jamie Hogsett (Interweave Press US $22.95) is part of the publisher’s “Create Jewelry” series. This one, as the title suggest, focuses on semi-precious stones. Of course, I have a weakness for stone beads since that is how I seriously got into jewelry making many years ago, and they still play an important part of my jewelry making repertoire. But, hey, who doesn’t love a good rock!?

But, for those uninitiated into the world of gemstones, this books is a good little bite of stone information as well as bead stringing techniques. Other than a couple of projects that require some bead weaving skills, the rest of the projects look very doable, even for the relative beginner. Interspersed throughout the 20+ projects are facts, legends, and history related to gemstones. So, along with some beautiful jewelry designs, you also get a little gemstone workshop as well.

One of my favorite projects was “Stone Soup,” an asymmetrical necklace that mixed carnelain, amethyst, serpentine, and glass beads. I also loved the “Sangria Dangles” earring project because it had a mixture of different shapes and different stone types dangled from textured round metal rings, very cool!

For those new to gemstone bead stringing, this is a good place to start.

Schoppink

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

It was with great trepidation that I entered my local Goodwill this afternoon.  I’ve not yet been to a thrift store in St Louis (my trip to the antique store doesn’t count), and I didn’t know how it would be–dingy and smelly and depressing?  Too expensive?  Too picked over?

Top 10 Mistakes of Buying Diamonds

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Diamond is the allotrope of carbon where the carbon atoms are arranged in an isometric-hex octahedral crystal lattice. Its hardness and high dispersion of light make it useful for industrial applications and jewelry. It is the hardest known naturally-occurring mineral. It is possible to treat regular diamonds under a combination of high pressure and high temperature to produce diamonds (known as Type-II diamonds) that are harder than the diamonds used in hardness gauges.

$50,000 Hearing Aid

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I came across an online news report of a 24 karat gold hearing aid that contains 220 diamonds. The company that produces the extravagant device is Widex and it could be yours for the small price of $ 50,000.00. Advertising itself as the “blingi-est” hearing aid in the world (and the most expensive), look for it at a hearing aid dealer near you.

Chandelier Earrings

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Spend a lot, or spend a little. You don’t have to spend a fortune to find a super looking pair of chandelier earrings — unless you want to. I chose these earrings for their looks, and they do represent a range of prices. If you like chandeliers, I think you’ll be able to find a nice pair for yourself or for a special gift.
