They Might Be Giants

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

In case you don’t know much about Arizona’s garden life, we actually do have one. Ever since we moved here, I have wanted an Argentine Giant. They are beautiful cacti, and have these incredible white flowers that bloom at night. And the scent is supposed to be magnificent.

Well, last week we had some landscaping upgrades done, and among those upgrades, I had an Argentine Giant planted in my front yard. Right now is the bloom season for cacti, and my new little baby had what I call “bloom balls” (no dirty jokes!).

I’ve been running outside every morning to see if the largest one had bloomed yet, and sure enough, this morning provided me with this gorgeous delight. And I can verify that the smell is heavenly.

Speaking of giants, I have a slight update on the JAPAC lobbying of Congress regarding the sale of 1+ carat diamonds at Armed Forces Exchanges. This issue caused quite a furor on a certain forum, and the VP of JA responded. He stated that for some time there has always been a rule limiting the PX’s to selling diamonds 1 carat or less, and they are merely lobbying to keep this in place.

Ok, fine. I responded to his statement this morning, and have asked why the PX’s are viewed any differently than other wholesale venues such as Costco, other than Congress can determine what is sold at the PX’s. I don’t know if he’ll respond, but I think more in-depth explanation is needed.

Be BOLD.

A Treasure’s Trove Background

Michael Stadther has always loved treasure hunts and knew that one day he would write a story that would provide children and adults with fun, entertainment and the possibility of finding a real buried treasure. The result of his efforts is “A Treasure’s Trove,” a fairy tale that encourages careful reading, puzzle-solving and exploring.

The tale revolves around twelve different forest creatures whose mates are crystallized and disappear during a strange dusk that affects the forest in the evenings. The creatures team up with Zac, a woodcarver, Ana, his part-elfin wife, and the winged Pook. They all set out to find their missing mates and put a stop to the dusk in order to save their forest home.

Readers follow along on the searches, interpreting clues to help find the missing creatures–really find the creatures, because each one is located somewhere in the continental United States in a spot that’s easily accessible by anyone who deciphers the clues correctly.

Claire Danes is the New Face of Gucci

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
Gucci chose Claire Danes to be the face of its Fall, 2008, ad campaign. I’ve always admired Claire’s chameleon-like ability to change her appearance and demeanor drastically to suit the role, more so than many other actresses. It will be interesting to see how that characteristic plays out in Gucci’s promotions.

Gold Metal Clay Star Earrings

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
I was very nervous about using some gold metal clay given to me for a gift, but I finally got up the nerve and realized that you don’t need a ton of gold metal clay to get a lot of bang for your jewelry buck. For these earrings, I used less then 3 grams of metal clay to make the star charms (actually, they were made from my leftover clay after I had made another jewelry piece with it).

You’ll need:

*PMC gold metal clay

15mm Star-shaped cutter

Olive oil

Roller

6 playing cards

Non-stick surface

Corsage pin

Sandpaper or emery board

Hot Pot

Burnishing brush

**2 - 5mm Golden Shadow Swarovski crystal beads

2 - 22-karat gold ear wires (#625722 from www.riogrande.com).
4 inches of 22-karat 22-gauge gold wire
Wire cutters

Round-nosed pliers

Chain-nosed pliers

*You can use the Art Clay equivalent, but you’ll need to fire it with a torch rather than a hot pot according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

**They came from JSbeads.com, crytal no. 5301.
